Have Been Unavoidably Detained By The World

Expect Me When You See Me

Note, I did not go in to filmmaking

Read a college AU fic today in which the pairing-of-choice were paired to shoot a short film for a class assignment. The fic itself was tiny, it wasn't a masterpiece or anything, it was clearly an id-fic of more idea than in-depth, plotty, beta-ed execution. Which is fine.

BUT.

As someone was who WAS paired up in film class to shoot short films, EVERYTHING ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT IS WRONG. It's a GIANT PAIN to film five minutes of material!! You DO NOT do it in a single shot, good lord, who are you, Hitchcock?????

YOU DIDN'T EVEN CHECK THE WHITE BALANCE, BOYS. THAT'S GOING TO COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU. I CAPSLOCK FROM EXPERIENCE.

Attempted to go to The Outside today and See A Film.

And...failed!

I'm finding it more amusing than anything. I'll cap it off by trying to figure out tumblr while listening to the debate, yes?

They also stuck brains into hats
Venice

I want a fic about the founders where they purposely design Hogwarts as some sort of rejection of normative Muggle architecture. "This will be a purely magical space" they declare as they make a room that only appears when people want it hard enough, a huge room that purposely looks like it has no ceiling, staircases that will do everything to prevent you from getting from point A to point B in a timely fashion, and a freaking dormitory (with windows!) under a lake before Muggles even have the technology to make that possible.

Then they spontaneously dress in quasi-Elizabethean-looking clothes even though they built the school around 990 AD WHEN MOVEABLE TYPE HAD NOT YET BEEN INVENTED.

Cross-posted to tumblr as an EXPERIMENT.

I find your lack of spam filter disturbing, livejournal
Venice
eldarwannabe
Thing the first: It's Yuletide letter season, or that one time a year when people suddenly re-active their livejournals. It's been fun. I should get popcorn.

Thing the second: So, apparently, when I was younger and capable, I wrote this massive Torchwood meta essay. And then, like a complete fail, apparently failed to respond to any comments? Wondering if I should do that now. Because I'm creaking back into fandom life.

But I digress.

There are a few legitimate comments on that page. And then, and I don't think you can see them, there are SIX AND A HALF PAGES OF SPAM.

I get emails every few days with another spam post. And it's GROSS STUFF. Weird transphobic porn advertisements. CONSTANTLY. D:

I finally logged in to turn off anonymous commenting. Let's see if that stops it? I can turn off commenting altogether, but I hate doing that. I was also tempted to fix some horrific grammar mistakes but I resisted. Let it live in all its mistaken glory.

Oh, look, going through the Teddy Lupin tag I started reading a story and didn't realize until three chapters in that it was a Copperbadge story.

How the eff.

I should assume every idea has already been thoroughly explored by a million Harry Potter fans
Venice
eldarwannabe
HAHAHAHA.

Ok, so when I wrote that last fic I was literally just trying to channel the "Narcissa Malfoy is all about family, that is her redeeming quality, hmmmm," thoughts in my brain. (Plus some "Harry is an awkward turtle who is determined to be A GOOD GODFATHER SO THERE.")

BUT. thoroughly

IT TURNS OUT.

There is a whole subsection of Harry/Draco fic that circles around Teddy. From first glance, it looks like a lot of these fics either use the Andromeda and Narcissa family ties to get Harry and Draco to spend time together AND/OR use Teddy to give Harry/Draco babeez because Ginny is out of the picture.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I feel like I'm going to accidentally trip over shared fanon a lot by accident, as I'm kinda reinventing the wheel over here. I only ever hovered in the gen spaces in Harry Potter fandom, which meant I missed most of what was going on, and even now I'm frankly trying to dig up more gen and canon-ships. So I'm missing the giant bulk of Harry Potter post-Deathly Hallows fic altogether.

I mean, I only found this because I went through most of AO3's "Teddy Lupin" tag after I posted. There is some really gorgeous godfather!Harry fic out there, all of it in the Harry/Draco tag as far as I can tell. LOLZ.

It's really frustrating when I have a fandom idea that is definitely tumblr-sized: short, funny (to me, at least), rebloggable, etc. The problem is that while I have no inherent objection to peeking back into tumblr, I have very, very little motivation in figuring out how to do community in tumblr. And I know if I post there I want to talk to people. ON THE WORST CONVERSATION PLATFORM. UUUUGGGHHH.

I mean, I'm a 3L but I don't have unlimited free time.

FOUND SOMEONE WHO SAW THE PLAY AND IS WRITING FIC.

On tumblr ugh, ugh, what is my life. I can't even figure out how to find other people to follow because tumblr is bad for a) comments, b) flists, c) everything.

(Also she saw it THREE TIMES. THE ENVYYYYYY.)

These are the most first-world problems in the world.

I still wouldn't date him though. Jerkface.

This is basically the first time I have ever felt invested in Draco. Sure, Makani's fanart made me have a lot of thinky thoughts about the Malfoy family overall (and definitely shaped my long-term view of them), but after feeling horrible for Draco in books six and seven, he wasn't exactly at the forefront of my mind.

Now?

SPOILERSCollapse )

Might have to dust off some Harry Potter fic writing skillz and write something for myself. I haven't done this in a while.

But hey, I recently got a comment on my dead, ancient Marauder fic basically demanding more. Which, because it's on ff.net, came off as more amusing than irritating. Hi commenter! It's nice to know ff.net is still ticking! (Actually, HP fandom seems pretty alive on ff.net, to my mild horror.)

I know, I know. If I want fic, I'm going to have to write it. Unfortunate, because I hate my writing. *sigh*

Time to dig into some Optional Canon and confuse myself!
Venice
eldarwannabe
I actually went to dig up my old Pottermore account today.

And...it looks like old Pottermore accounts are defunct and I have to make a new one? But I love my old username! SeekerMugwump142, I hardly knew you!

Plus, it looks like they got rid of dueling. Which was the one feature I had fun playing with. :/

ETA: Oh, no, it looks like I can reclaim my house affiliation. PHEW. Imagine if I'd been resorted out of Hufflepuff???? D:

But it looks like all the cool features went away because "The new Pottermore has been designed to appeal to a more mature audience". Ugh, mature audiences. I can find those anywhere on the internet.

ETA2: Oh, it looks like my username is lost forever. :(

BUT I FOUND OUT MY WAND DETAILS AGAIN! "Sycamore wood with a Unicorn hair core 10 ¾ inches and Slightly Springy."

ETA3: Ugh, no, no Ilvermorny house for me. Odds are good that I wouldn't have attended anyway; the US is VERY POPULATED.

More fanfiction, y/y?
Venice
eldarwannabe
It's going to a bit of all Harry Potter, all the time, for a while at least. I can't help it. The play was like this shot of adrenaline in the fandom-lobe of my BRAIN.

The problem is that while ALL I WANT IN THE WORLD is to read a ton of Harry Potter fic right now, I forgot this fandom is super-dedicated to ships I don't see. I don't ship Harry/Draco, Hermione/Draco, Harry/anyone old enough to be his father, Hermione/anyone old enough to be her father, Harry/Hermione, or Sirius/Remus. (The fandom doesn't seem super interested in Ron.)

That's...a lot of fic I'm not particularly interested in reading. Which is how fandom rolls, mostly. It goes off into white-dude-slash-trends and that's fine. I've just been completely spoiled by Torchwood and Inception, both in quality of fic, and 'ships that were either canon or for some reason fine in my brain. (Inception is weird. I think my brain just ignored the move and bought into the shared fan!canon instead. I did read fic before seeing the film and the fic is tip-top-notch.)

I have a lot (A LOT) of feelings about the "no homo!" aspects of Cursed Child, but I'll come back to that, I'm sure, so that leaves me with canon pairings, overall. (I will pine for some really fantastic Dumbledore/Grindelwald unhealthy-relationship youth-pining disaster fic.)

So I'm in a in a weird place. I could go off and try to find gen fic, of which there are cubbyholes. I have a friend who isn't into fandom at all except for being a TOTAL Harry/Ginny fangirl, so I've asked her to send me recs, which I'm looking forward to browsing. But my old craving for Marauder fic is coming back and it's a mess down there. And while I really want Harry/Ginny (Ginny never gets enough love), I also want to read Ron/Hermione and, yes, some Tonks/Remus fic because that 'ship still puzzles me. I don't think JKR gave it enough time in canon and I really, really dislike the fanon idea that it was just Remus replacing Sirius. Fandom, you are not fixing your erasing-women-to-slash-men problem there.

Also, would settle for lots and lots and lots of post-DH fic. MORE HUGO PLEASE. And, weirdly, for the first time, um, more Draco?

tl;dr All I want is fic with canon ships, okay? Why is it so hard to find?????

I just went searching for my absolute favorite Harry Potter fic and found out that the site it was on is down, the Wayback Machine does not have it, and it has not been uploaded to AO3.

*breathes into a paper bag*

It was called Hermione, a History, it was by Nope, I can see it linked here on the Internet Archive.

I mean, I know I'm freaking out a little bit because I'm having a bad day week two days, but I really, really, really, really want to read this fic.

I'm not even sure were to go. Tumblr? I would attempt to poke tumblr for this if I knew how. :/

ETA: I went crazy and found a Harry Potter fic finder community that is not quite dead. I then posted this

ETA1: I have no opened a tab with every. single. saved. page. the Internet Archive has on this site. Please please please.

ETA2: I have found the authors LJ. She has posted as recently as January 1. Do I say something? Is this creeping? It is, isn't it?

ETA3: OMG I FOUND IT I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS MOMENT IS HAPPENING. *resists urge to weep in law school library*

For myself and my posterity, I do ordain and establish this link (passwords here) for the United States of America. And I'm also saving it as a document on my computer. I've already screencapped the page just in case.

Mort! In which Susan makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE.
Venice
eldarwannabe
I have 300,000 things I want to say about the Harry Potter Play (did I mention I loved it? I loved it. With the total unironic enthusiasm of a fan who has lost most of the ability of discernment. I want to see it a million more times and also never see it again to never tarnish the perfect memory in my mind) it's been hard to sum up feelings.

SO BEFORE I FORGET.

My trip included a brief Edinburgh detour because L and I were a bit worried that Scotland is going to Brexit Brexit right back to the EU. And we totally unintentionally ended up there during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

GOTTA SEE SOME INDIE THEATRE, AM I RIGHT?

Me, the giant nerd, saw people waving little signs for a theatre adaptation of Terry Pratchet's Mort. MORT.

Have I mentioned that I've never read any Discworld? I know, I know, massive fail, but I kept trying The Color of Magic and just...eeeeehhhh. I have seen The Hogfather film/TV adaptation though! That's something?

Anyway, I grabbed a Mort flyer. And we read it. And we laughed.

And then we bought tickets.

AND THEN WE SAW IT.

The show was, objectively, pretty amateur. But it was so much fun, and hilarious, and the effects were startlingly really good. The spoiler?Collapse )

Anyway, it was great. Turns out the my friends thought I chose the play because I'd read the book (oops) but we all had a good time. A pretty nerdy start to a REALLY nerdy trip.

JSTOR is a Harry/Hermione shipper! D:

Actually, I share almost no ships with JSTOR? I guess depending how you define 'ship. I will only accept Poe and Finn if Rey is in there too.

And John/Alexander Hamilton only works if we acknowledge that I can simultaneously ship Alexander/Eliza. CAUSE I SHIP IT INTO THE GROUND.

Silver lining
Venice
eldarwannabe
I'm going to see the Harry Potter play this summer ([profile] fiwen1010 and [personal profile] ilizze, in the incredible off-chance you see this, YES I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU!) and I'm avoiding spoilers. I literally told someone today that if they spoil they will be dead to me.

(I'm not actually that sensitive about spoilers in general these days, but it's Harry Potter, ok???)

I don't want to read the script because I'm a weirdo and for a non-musical I would really prefer to just see the play in its intended form first. I know I'll miss things because I always have trouble with fast-paced speech, but who cares. I can always read the script later.

Anyway, I'm a little cautious with the internet right now because of spoilers, but I realized that tumblr has MAJOR SPOILER ETIQUETTE ISSUES and I don't even know people on facebook know that avoiding spoilers online is a thing, but luckily, I'm sure even the HP people I follow on LJ/DW would be polite enough to spoiler-cut.

Gosh, I love you guys.

UGH.

I just recommended the DC Animated Universe to some friends over the weekend and then I turn on my computer to see that The Killing Joke animated movie actually made the story worse???

WORSE?

ASDFGHJKL.

DC, your animated movie slate is frankly disappointing. You give us this drek instead of a potential Batgirl: Year One film? And frankly, I'll believe the Judas Contract movie is coming when I see it. I have been waiting, gosh, since the second NYCC when it was first announced?

Luckily, I think nothing will dampen my wild and irrational enthusiasm for the Wonder Woman movie. Note the irrationality. *clings*
